Street art has its beginnings in ancient times when people carved symbols, names, and messages on cave walls, monuments, and public places. These early artworks were like visual stories, showing who owned the land and sharing ideas.
As cities grew, graffiti started to be seen as a problem, and laws were made to stop it. People thought it made cities look bad and showed there was no order.
Let's explore the fascinating journey and recognise the role of Southend Street Artists in this lively art scene.

Changes in the 20th Century
In the late 20th century, there was a change as some artists started using graffiti to express themselves.
Inspired by hip-hop culture, graffiti became linked with music, dance, and fashion. Artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring mixed graffiti with fine art. This challenged old ideas and made street art seen as a real form of art. Artists like Banksy got famous for their art that made people think about politics.
Now, galleries and museums show street art, saying it's important to our culture. Some people still think of graffiti as rebellion, but others see it as a way to be creative. Communities even have legal graffiti walls, so artists can add to public places in a positive way.
Technology has also changed graffiti a lot. Artists can plan and design graffiti using digital tools like Adobe Illustrator before putting it on walls. Social media lets artists share their work with people around the world and meet other artists too.
